Sleep Deprivation

Among many problems that Americans face is the ever-growing problem of sleep deprivation. Too many times, we deprive our bodies of the sleep that it needs simply so that we can squeeze more time into our day. However, what we fail to realize is that our body needs the rest so that it can function at its best. It is when we don't allow ourselves to rest properly that we begin to wear ourselves down. Then what good are we?

Not everyone works a 9am to 5pm job. In fact, there are many people out there who work all sorts of odd jobs. For example, police officers often work in shifts- especially if they are patrol officers and work a 'beat'. This can sometimes mean shifting schedules of working both daytime hours as well as midnight shifts, etc. For those who work odd hours of both the day and night, as well as those people who work normal work hours, figuring out a sleep schedule that works for you is essential. For example, for people who leave for work at night and return in the early morning, they may have no choice but to sleep during the day.

Once you figure out a sleep schedule that works for you, you will be able to get yourself on a better schedule for getting the rest that you need. Occasionally, we cannot help the types of things that affect our ability to fall asleep. Some of these things include: being sick, going out with friends, social engagements, and general insomnia. What are some of the things that lead us to suffer from insomnia or the inability to fall asleep?

Our brains are extremely active during the times when we are awake, and for some people, it can be difficult to shut our brains off. We live in a society where time is money and where some believe that while you are sleeping, someone else is working twice as hard to get your job at work or beat you in the next race, etc. We live during a time when both parents work at least one full time job, where people have children, errands that never seem to get done, and time that never seems to get spent doing the things that we like to do. Therefore, every second we have while we are awake is essential. Because of this, we often try to push ourselves beyond what we really should. We insist on pulling 'all nighters? so that we can impress the boss the next day. We stay up late to read our children their favorite bedtime stories or to clean up the house, or to make a to-do list for the next day. There is always something that needs to get done, and countless other things that never seem to get done no matter how much time and energy we put into things. So, what do we do so that we can get to sleep? Some suggest taking prescription medication, drinking herbal tea or listening to soothing music.
