Is Crystal Meth Addictive? Crystal meth (crystal methamphetamine) is a highly addictive synthetic-stimulant drug associated with memory loss, psychotic behavior and long term brain damage. Sold in the form of rocky clear crystals, crystal meth produces a euphoric high that can last up to 12 hours, increasing the user’s level of energy, alertness, sex drive and elevates mood. However, due to tolerance build-up and the intense high, crystal meth can cause the user to develop compulsive drug-seeking behavior, sparking an addiction that can result serious mental and physical health complications for many years.

It doesn’t take long to get hooked on crystal meth. In fact, it’s so addictive that some users start to get hooked upon first using crystal meth. After the body becomes dependent, and the user discontinues drug use, withdrawal symptoms cause the recovery process to be extremely difficult at both a physical and psychological level, as the user often experiences symptoms such as depression, low energy, high body temperature, intense cravings, cardiac arrhythmia, and suicidal thoughts. As a result of an intense withdrawal period, drug relapses is a common occurrence during crystal meth recovery.

Addiction treatment for crystal meth dependency often begins with a 5 to 7-day medical detox to overcome the withdrawal period. After detox is complete, the client can begin addiction treatment therapies that are tailored to his or her specific needs, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Contingency Management, and Family Behavior Therapy. There is no medication treatment currently available for crystal meth addiction. Alternative holistic therapies can also be incorporated to the treatment program, such as detox massage therapy, yoga, meditation and art therapy. It’s important to consider going to rehab to beat crystal meth addiction, as seeking professional treatment from mental health and addiction specialists will lead to the highest chance of success for a life-long recovery from crystal meth abuse.
