Drug Addiction Treatment in Nebraska

Alcoholism in the Midwest

Like much of the rural Midwest, Nebraska has its share of problems with addiction while avoiding a lot of the more serious epidemics seen on the East and West coasts. Sparsely populated and surrounded by other states that are sparsely populated, major drug trafficking does not have a strong hold on the area and there seem to be few if any urban metropolitan areas for crack cocaine and heroin abuse to take hold in.

However, this does not mean that thousands of Nebraskans are not suffering from chronic addiction. Alcoholism is seen in much greater instances in state than the vast majority of the other states in the country. A particularly troubling state statistic is the prevalence of binge-drinking amongst teenagers. The 16-25 year old age group in Nebraska abuses alcohol at a rate far and above the national average.

Prescriptions drug abuse is another national epidemic that affects all states. Opiate painkillers such as Oxycontin and Vicodin, depressants such as Valium and Xanax, and stimulants such as Ritalin and Adderall, are large parts of this crisis. Often they are prescribed for minor problems but after a few weeks' or months' use the user will become hopelessly addicted. They are also fraudulently obtained and re-sold illicitly in large quantities, so chronic and recreational drug users have easy access to these chemicals. Opiate painkillers are particularly dangerous because they are as addictive as heroin and overdoses occur from these drugs more often today than every other form of addiction in the nation.

Another plight that affects Nebraska and multiple surrounding states is addiction on Native American reservations. Since their inception, Native American reservations have been host to some of the highest rates of generational poverty, unemployment, violence, domestic abuse, preventable disease, poor mental health, and lack of social services nationwide, regardless of what state they are in. Today Native Americans only account for less than 2% of the state's population in 4 reservations in the Northeast of the state, but the suffering occurring in these places due to drug addiction is far more severe than all of Nebraska. The possible exceptions are a few impoverished neighborhoods in Omaha and Lincoln that suffer from drug crime.
