New England's Ongoing Drug Abuse Epidemic

Much like surrounding states Vermont and Maine, New Hampshire is sparsely populated through much of the state and has only a few metropolitan and urbanized areas. In spite of this it carries a much higher incidence of drug abuse than many other states, a trend shared with many New England states. There are a number of factors contributing to this, most significantly is the fact that neighboring New York and Boston are areas with the largest drug trafficking centers in the country. Another reason is that New Hampshire is a popular winter tourism destination because of its resorts and skiing slopes.

New Hampshire has a very high rate of teenagers and young adults that abuse drugs and alcohol, and while many resources exist in the state, they are not used nearly enough. This is especially the case when it comes to prescription drugs such as VicodinOxycontinXanaxValiumAdderall and Ritalin. These legal but easily abused substances are prescribed, fraudulently obtained, or bought from street dealers in massive quantities every day. Unlike many illicit drugs such as marijuana or ecstasy it is extremely rare that these drugs can be taken recreationally without suffering consequences. Prescription opiates can trap someone into addiction on their first try, much like heroin, and will then take several days to detox from. Prescription drug addiction is quickly catching up with alcohol addiction as the most popularly abused drug in New Hampshire. Prescription drugs have already surpassed in overdose deaths in New Hampshire, with the majority of cases reported to be overdose of prescription drugs also involving alcohol abuse.

New Hampshire has a relatively progressive policy towards drug abuse and has a lower prison population than most states. However, this ultimately does not help educate the vast majority of people of the realities of drug addiction. The fact is that even many people who suffer from alcoholism are going to need alcohol rehab in order to quit drinking and stay sober. A professionally guided detox is often just the beginning of the recovery process. After detox, counselors and peer groups help individuals struggling with addiction to come to terms with their dangerous lifestyle choices. Also, through rehab, recovering individuals are able to identify the underlying problems that may have caused the addiction, and they learn how to apply newly acquired coping skills to deal with their problems.

Recovery may come slowly over the course of several months, and in the case of opiate addicts, years - but when it comes to a life or death choice, addicts and those that care for them need to make a decision and choose treatment over prison or sudden death.
